Trafficking in persons is the illegal but transport and sale of human beings. It is a global human rights phenomenon involving hundreds of thousands of victims each year. Families may sell everything they own to get to a place of safety during a conflict situation; however, trafficking also involves the sale of women and children for the sex industry. While some asylum seekers may have arrived in the UK through trafficking, they may be scared to report this to the police.
