While there is limited research in the field of asylum seekers and refuges and self-harm, anecdotal evidence suggest that, many asylum seekers (especially women living with violent partners) are self abusing (through cutting and other forms of self-injurious behaviour). Asylum seekers distress maybe compounded by their past experience, as well as their current living conditions. Deliberate self- harm may indicate a risk of suicide.
Deliberate self-harm should never be ignored.
